You're eager to pick up your crochet skills again or even get started! But you have no idea what materials you need...
There are many types of crochet hooks, which can be broadly divided into three categories: basic metal crochet hooks, wooden crochet hooks, and metal crochet hooks with a (usually plastic) handle. We'll briefly discuss the pros and cons here! Then you can decide for yourself which one is best for you.
- The basics: metal crochet hooks
These are the ones you remember from your childhood. They come in different brands and qualities. The head of the hook is a crucial element! If it's poorly shaped or too thick, it can be difficult to crochet.
We source our basic hooks from Germany, either generic or from the top brand Addi. These hooks are very easy to use due to their smoothness, and they're also strong, making them more suitable for crochet projects that require very tight grip, such as bags or baskets. The downside is that you usually can't take them on a plane, so they're not suitable for carry-on luggage!
- The most environmentally friendly crochet hooks, made of wood
Wooden crochet hooks, such as those from Knitpro, are becoming increasingly common; they're eco-friendly and look very nice. However, there are significant differences between them! Don't be tempted to buy a cheap set, like those you find here and there these days. They might look nice, but don't be fooled; the price difference is there!
With these wooden crochet hooks, the finish of the head is crucial. It must be well-made, with the right curve and sufficient thickness on the handle so it doesn't break immediately. Wood is a bit stiffer than metal, but feels very pleasant in the hand. Another advantage is that they're carry-on luggage-friendly. The price doesn't differ much from metal crochet hooks without a handle. The downside is that thinner wooden crochet hooks can break when working with heavier or stiffer yarn!
- The luxury hooks for intensive use: the Tulip crochet hooks
Finally, there are metal crochet hooks with handles, which also come in all sorts of variations. Here, we'll discuss Tulip's ergonomic grip hooks. We can safely call these the top of the line! The Tulip grip is designed to reduce strain on the hand and wrist, meaning that people who crochet frequently will experience less or no wrist pain. The price is a bit higher, but it's justified for the sheer crocheting pleasure this hook will bring! If you plan to take up this hobby more, we highly recommend this hook!
